North Providence High school is located in North Providence on 1828 Mineral Spring Avenue. North Providence High School holds up to a little over 950 students and 105 classroom teachers. 51 percent of the students are male and 49 percent of the students are female(Public School Review 2003-2007). In grades nine, ten and eleven there are over two hundred students and in twelfth grade the are more then three hundred students. My senior graduating class had a little over three hundred students walk the stage. For this report I will be able to show you North Providence High School's community background, school anaysis and tell you about the district. For this project we were told to focus mainly on those three topics to get students, teachers, etc familiar with a certain school of our choice.
Community Background
The cultural makeup in North Providence is very diverse. "Three percent of the students are Asian, ten percent are Hispanic, five percent are Black and eighty two percent are White"(Public School Review, 2003-2007) . In the community there are families struggling to pay bills and just do not make enough money so the Federal Government supplies schools with different prices that students can pay for lunches. One is free lunch, which fourteen percent of the students are eligible for and the other is reduced lunch price which five percent were eligible for (Public School Review, 2003-2007 ).
The community is overall safe. Every community has crime rates, so I will not sit here and say North Providence is perfect. Along with the community being safe the school also follows safety for students. North Providence High School is very serious about safety and rules and regulations. Everything is to be followed to have the school run smoothly and safely with no problems occuring. Within the area code (02904) "the population is 29,416. The population of people with their college degree who are twenty five years or older is 26 percent. The population age average is forty years old and the average household size is 2.2 persons. The average of number of rooms in a household would be 4.6 rooms. The median household income is 33,926" (Public School Review 2003-2007). The community plays a big part of the high school. The support of the community is needed to make sure the students are safe and also to help with funding and morals. Parents in the community getting together to help the school, whether it be to raise money for the school, just get involved or even to help students converse with other students to help with their learning skills. A good community is what brings families and schools together as one. Parents should deffinetly be involved with their childrens schooling. It is easier for teachers to get intouch with the parents of the students incase there are any problems and by getting the community out and involved in the schools will make it easier for teachers to do so.
Also when looking at a community it is very important to look at the crime rates to see the percentage in your city and what kinds of crimes are occurring that we do not no about. From the year 2001 to 2005 the property crime has decreased but then increased but not by much. For the crime of rape, in 2001 it was 7 and 2002 and 2003 it was 5 then in 2004 and 2005 it raised back up to 7. There is a high rate of burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft in North Providence Rhode Island. Here are some charts that are found interesting in showing different crime rates.

District
As far as the North Providence High School district goes, it is the only Public High School in North Providence. In the North Providence High School district there tends to be a high rate of in and out of school suspensions in the high school. There were sometimes where the middle schools in North Providence ranged higher then the high school. In the middle school there was more of disorderly conduct and skipping detentions and also fighting, sexual and verbal harassment (Infoworks). The North Providence district makes sure that they highly discipline their students to make sure they learn from their mistakes and to try and stop things like suspensions. (Inforworks- Suspensions/Development)
The school district makes sure that the schools are healthy and are clean. North Providence High School has all different types of vending machines, including snacks, vitamin water, Gatorade and other juices. You would think we would have a soda machine like other high schools because we are older but the district did not want soda to be available to students in school. Our superintendent Donna M. Ottaviano makes sure that the schools of North Providence get what they need. School supplies, communication and donations.
Our school district makes sure we have easy access to transportation to the schools in our area. There are many school buses that stop between one to four miles from your house to the high school. There are buses that go almost all the way down to providence to pick up students for school at North Providence High. The buses are to make sure they are at the school right at 1:55 when school lets out and usually they were all there at the same time to pick up students. North Providence High School also allows student parking so students can bring there own cars and use there own transportation routes. At North Providence High School every student who drives there own vehicle to school must buy a school permit that is five dollars. North Providence High School makes room for students and faculty to feel safe and comfortable. ( Projo)
SCHOOL ANALYSIS
The North Providence High School has a mission statement for all of us students to follow. It is "to educate all students in a safe, nurturing, and challenging environment which empowers them to become well-rounded individuals who are life-long learners and productive members of society," This statement is in every room of the high school to boost the confidence level of students in every one of their classes. The envioronment of the school is definitely important to the high school staff. Having a safe envioronment, a positive envioronment both in and out of the class room will make students happier and more willing to learn. Parental support also plays a big role in student's success. A good supportive school would be to have good guidance counselors, hence the word guidance they guide the students to success for their future which I think is very important to have in every school. In North Providence High School the teacher to student ratio is 1:11. (Public Review 2003-2007)
Diversity is one of the most important parts of the high school, along with the importance of academic programs. At North Providence High School there are many different races, backgrounds, beliefs and attitudes (Public Review 2003-2007). I think that by learning to respect other classmates that are going to be around you for four years of your life is very important. It is good to respect everyone whether or not the color of their skin does not match yours, or their background because by being more diverse you can learn more things and make new friends. A variety is always better my mother and father always said to me. Never discriminate, which we see a lot today in many schools. ESL, English as a second language is a good class for students who do not know how to speak English that well. It is good to help them learn it that way they can feel more comfortable within the school and within the community. At North Providence High School about 25 percent of the students are in ESL classes. In North Providence High School, right when you walk through the doors as a freshman the one major goal to put into your head is grades, academics and your future. It is good that teachers make sure they keep their students interested in what is being taught to keep their attention. Also it is good to keep the students involved in learning and doing their homework, papers and projects and not slacking off because they are bored with what is being taught. I think that teachers should use different learning skills and abilities with students because not everyone has the same learning style. After being a student at North Providence High School for four years I learned that the teachers there make sure to take the time to learn every students learning style so that each student gets involved in the work in the classroom and does not miss out on anything he/she would not want to miss out on. Overall the teachers at North Providence High treat every student with respect and makes sure to have a good personality and a good relationship with their students and most importantly being unbiased and treating everyone the same. It is also important for schools to offer extra cirricular activites, which North Providence High School has a variety of. They have football, baseball, softball(girls), basketball girls and boys, wrestling, cheerleading, dance team, lacrosse (girls), golf team, tennis boys and girls, swimming girls and boys, track girls and boys, and hockey. It is a good way to get involved in the school and show students a way to test time management with school work and being involed in extra school activities.
Many high schools make sure their students take standardized testing very serious. In North Providence High School, in the years 2006 and 2007 for the English and Language Arts section 54.6 percent of the students scored high in 2006 and 55.3 percent of the students scored high in 2007. For the math section of the test 4.9 percent of the students scored high in 2006 and 41.9 percent of students scored high in 2007. Math is my worst subject, especially working on math during the standardized tests, which is why most students score low on that portion. North Providence High School offers AP courses in Science, Mathematics, History and English. By taking AP course you can take a lead before attending the college you want. It helps students get ready and learn about college courses and actually take the course that they would have to take when they were a college student. The NCLB act is popular in many schools, but not in a good way. At North Providence High School, the principal Joseph B. Goho states " some of its rules are designed to make public schools look bad." In an article by Richard C. Dujardin, Goho states " the school is classified as making insufficient progress because regulations make it difficult for urban schools with diverse populations, particularly students with special needs, to show progress every year" (Projo.com). In North Providence High School there are two targets missing because special needs students are not progressing every year like they should, and educators have lowered the scores of the special need students. Goho believes " that the No Child Left Behind act was set up to create the impression that public schools are failing." Votes are still going through on what will happen with the NCLB act at North Providence Schools.
Conclusion
Overall, the high school of North Providence is a very safe educational school. North Providence school committee and district makes sure the students are getting everything they need, such as academic needs, tutoring, testing classes that can be taken to help on certain standardized tests, for example the SATS, which are very important when applying for colleges. The community in North Providence is very secure and also safe. When students go into school and leave school there are bus monitors and teachers watching the area to make sure students get home ok and get on the right buses. I also like the idea of having a cop in every one of our schools. I am not sure about any other schools but I do no that in North Providence Schools there is always a cop incase of any problems like fights or anything illegle being brought into the schools. They are also there when a student needs to talk. Our school also came up with the Senior Project, and was the first school to actually apply it to there seniors. Some schools have followed us and is starting to apply it to their seniors. For the Senior Project the seniors are told to pick a subject they are interested in and throughout the year they have to do a total of sixteen field work hours with a person in that profession. They have to write a paper of eight pages, have a visual and have a 8-12 minute presentation in front of a panel of five to six judges from the town of North Providence. It is a very long process and day when it comes to Senior Project day. Every student has to follow the Senior Project Handbook and also has to dress appropriately in business attire when presenting. The Senior Project has to be done by seniors and has to be passed in order to walk the stage and graduate. North Providence High School makes sure to inform and educate the students in getting them ready for their future, and after attending the high school for four years they helped me get where I am today, attending the University Of Rhode Island.
